Restic in Ubuntu main and Déjà Dup support questions

Hello! I’m the maintainer of a the Déjà Dup Backups app, which uses Restic behind the scenes. I wanted to mention two pieces of news for the Restic community.

Restic in Ubuntu main

Ubuntu Desktop ships Déjà Dup by default, and they recently finished their security review of Restic to include it by default as well. So with the upcoming 26.04 release, Ubuntu Desktop will now also include Restic.

This means Restic has been promoted from the “universe” to the “main” repository and will now enjoy security support from Canonical.

That’s neat!

Déjà Dup support questions

You may see an uptick of support questions referencing Déjà Dup because more folks will be using Restic through it, as a result of the recent enabling of Restic by default (and Ubuntu turning it on per above).

Déjà Dup never redirects them here, I’m just guessing they might see that it’s using Restic and think to come here.

Sorry for any burden this causes, but folks are likely just confused about where to turn for help. Feel free to redirect them as needed to (some links I will put in the replies, because I’m limited to two links as a new forum user).

I will try to poke in here every now and then too, but I’m paying a little more attention to my own support channels.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ve pinned this topic globally for a month; hopefully that will help Déjà Dup users to find this topic and direct their questions to the links you’ve provided instead.

That’s very cool news @mikix, congratulations on the success with the tool!

After some consideration I have moved this thread to the Community section, and while we might see more Déjà Dup questions coming this way (which are all welcome, by the way!) we can address an increased amount of these when that happens (e.g. with pinned notices if needed), so for now I’ve unpinned this thread. I hope you don’t mind.
