Lack of Documentation on how to do a full system back up

I want to backup my entire linux logical volume so that if Linux fails to start I can easily restore it back to the state it was in before failure.

You should probably be doing LVM snapshots, then either backing up the LVM snapshot at a block level, or, backing up the contents of the LVM snapshot. This ensures transactionally consistent data
